Virtual Preceptorships & Virtual Medical Centers

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much is an interactive video learning journey worth? Imagine exploring the halls of a medical center or physician’s office all from the comfort of your laptop. Walking through the front door of the medical center, the virtual user stops at the front desk to open a map of the hospital. Visiting various areas of the medical center, the participant learns firsthand about the diagnosis, treatment, and challenges of a particular disease or disorder – all from the perspectives of the treatment team and the patient.
Unlike a non-interactive, paper-based learning system, the interactive multimedia virtual preceptorship allows the representative to explore and expand upon knowledge about who and what is important in the treatment of patients. Additionally, the ability to virtually see through the eyes of patients or physicians will provide the sales representative with understanding, empathy, and insight that goes well beyond just selling a drug. As Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu put it, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Allow your learners to step into the shoes of their key customers (physicians, treatment team members, patients, and caregivers) and walk away with a new vision and perspective.
Virtual preceptorships can be specific to a particular disease category and treatment or expand to explore the whole medical center environment as well. The virtual preceptorship is a combination of text, video, animation, assessments/knowledge games, case studies, and written material. Electronic case studies and scenarios will allow users to work through problems, situations, or similar activities as they learn to better understand the physician’s decision-making process. To maximize the interactivity and relevance to the learner, a learning journal may be incorporated into the learner’s virtual exploration for the participant to take notes, answer questions about his or her own customers and medical centers, and to set goals and action plans for his or her own territories.
